Giving up on applying for representative selection Ryu Han-soo challenges the Paris Olympics
Korean wrestling star Kim Hyun-woo (35, Samsung Life Insurance), a gold medalist at the 2012 London Olympics, is retiring from the national team.
The Korean Wrestling Association announced on the 13th, “Kim Hyun-woo has decided to return the Taegeuk mark,” and “he will not compete in the first round of national team selection.”
Kim Hyun-woo gave up participating in the 2024 National Team 1st Selection Tournament and the 17th National Wrestling Championships and 34th Fall National University Wrestling Championships, which will be held in Taebaek-si, Gangwon-do starting on the 13th.
Although he is retiring from the national team, he is expected to continue his career as a player and think about his future career.
Kim Hyun-woo, gold medalist in the men"s Greco-Roman 66 kg class at the 2012 London Olympics, has been active as a representative figure in Korean wrestling for a long time.
Kim Hyun-woo, who won a gold medal at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games and a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, was confirmed to have COVID-19 ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which was supposed to be the stage for his retirement, and was unable to participate.
He showed his will to extend his career as a player and tried to ignite his final flame at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, but suffered a rib injury before the opening of the competition and failed to win a medal.
Ryu Han-soo (35, Samsung Life Insurance), who has led Korean wrestling along with Kim Hyun-woo, will challenge himself to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Ryu Han-soo, a leading figure in the men"s Greco-Roman 67kg class, won gold medals at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games and the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games.
However, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and failed to achieve his third consecutive victory in the competition.
Ryu Han-soo can aim for a spot at the Paris Olympics through the Olympic quota competition after winning the Taegeuk mark through the second round of selection.
